Nonlithophysal Rock Fall on Waste Packages

Nonlithophysal Rock Fall on Waste Packages

Zekai Ceylan

This study uses the nonlinear transient dynamic Finite Element code LS-DYNA to simulate the impact of falling nonlithophysal rocks on a Naval nuclear waste package. The detailed 3D Finite Element models, which include contact and plastic material behavior, demonstrate that even worst-case corner drop impacts do not cause plastic strains to exceed the failure limit of the waste package's outer barrier.

High Cycle Fatigue Crack Modeling and Analysis for Deck Truss Flooring Connection Details

High Cycle Fatigue Crack Modeling and Analysis for Deck Truss Flooring Connection Details

Anthony H. DePiero, Robert K. Paasch

This paper develops a high-fidelity methodology using global/local Finite Element Analysis in ABAQUS to investigate high cycle fatigue cracking in a naval ship's deck truss connection. A detailed solid submodel provides precise stresses for a ZENCRACK fracture mechanics analysis, which successfully predicts fatigue lives consistent with in-service observations.

Numerical simulation of ballistic impact on composite laminates

Numerical simulation of ballistic impact on composite laminates

M.A.G.Silva , C.Cismasiu, C.G.Chiorean

This paper details the implementation of a 3D spectral-element method to simulate the complex process of multistage excavation in elastoplastic soils. The study validates its parallelized software, which uses a Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion and domain decomposition, by applying it to several excavation examples.

Factors Affecting the Finite Element Simulation of a ROPS Test of a Volvo Cab

Factors Affecting the Finite Element Simulation of a ROPS Test of a Volvo Cab

Rikard Svärd

This paper investigates the critical parameters in a Finite Element simulation of a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) test for a Volvo cab, aiming to validate the use of LS-DYNA as a substitute for physical testing. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the accuracy of the FEA results is most dependent on the material model's strain hardening characteristics and the definition of the contact algorithm.
