Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of research activities at the Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets (CSAR) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. CSAR is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) to advance computational simulation of complex, multicomponent systems. Using the NASA Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters as its primary simulation vehicle, CSAR's program is implementing a fully integrated simulation code (GEN1) to characterize burn scenarios and potential component failures. Future work includes a second-generation code (GEN2) with refined multiscale component models and advanced system integration concepts.
